Baptism

Baptism in the Catholic Church is an incredibly important day for your child. Baptism removes original sin and thus opens the gates of heaven. Your child will become a Catholic and able to participate in the Church and receive the other Sacraments. A baptized person receives a “Sacramental Character” which is a receiving of the very nature of God into the soul and thus becoming a true Child of God.

Baptism for Infants and Children Under Seven

St. John Neumann rejoices with you in your desire to baptize your child. The Church is here to assist you and walk with you on the journey of faith for your child. Our prayers are with you already 

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us on the sublime truth of this essential sacrament. Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit (vitae spiritualis ianua), and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as sons of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission: "Baptism is the sacrament of regeneration through water in the word." (CCC 1213).

Here are the steps required for baptism at Saint John Neumann:

1. Fill out the Baptism Application 
   • Visit www.sjncatholic.org/baptismal-application to fill out the online form
   • You will need the following information to complete this form:
   • Parent's names, addresses, contact information, and marriage information
   • Child's name and birthdate
   • Godparents' names and contact information.  
2. Have Godparents complete sponsor form.  For more information on godparents, visit www.sjncatholic.org/godparents.
3. Register for a Baptism class 
4. Visit www.sjncatholic.org/baptism-class to register for a class at our parish
   The church requires preparation for all sacraments, including Baptism.  This class must be taken before the child's Baptism.  Parents and godparents are required to take a Baptism preparation class, which may be taken at SJN or at their own parish*.

5. Schedule the Baptism 
   Once you have completed the application and attended the class, contact Gloria Fernandez at [email protected] or 301-977-5492 to schedule your child's Baptism.

* If you have taken a baptism class within the last (5) years, you do not need to retake this class.
Classes are in person.  (Contact us if you need an online option for parents who are out of town).

Baptism for Adults and Children Over the Age of Seven

Baptism for adults and older children is handled through our Faith Formation office.
